What Is the SMARTIES Principle?

Are you interested in using a simple, powerful tool that can guide your eating in a way that supports your health and fitness goals, helps you feel good, look good and stay consistent for life? The SMARTIES Principle is a practical approach that makes eating easier, more enjoyable and more sustainable.

S – Stick to It for Life

How awesome would it be to have an eating plan you can follow for the rest of your life? Something simple, enjoyable and realistic — not a strict diet that sets you up to quit. Is it possible that the easier your eating plan is to follow, the more likely you are to stay consistent?

M – Moderation

Moderation means adjusting your eating plan in a way that suits your lifestyle and your goals. Small changes over long periods of time can be far more effective than overwhelming, drastic diet changes. With this approach, you’re more likely to enjoy your eating plan and stick with it.

A – Achievable

Wouldn’t it be great to have an eating plan that helps you achieve your goals without feeling impossible? You can do this by setting small, achievable steps within your nutrition. Is it possible that when your goals feel reachable, you feel more motivated and more like an achiever? And is it possible that setting the bar too high could lead to the opposite result?

R – Realistic

What if you considered being realistic about your eating goals? That means knowing what foods you genuinely enjoy and making sure they’re included. A non-realistic approach would be forcing yourself to eat foods you dislike or drastically restricting calories to the point where meals are no longer enjoyable.

T – Time Efficient

Is it possible that a great eating plan also needs to be time efficient? What if you looked at your lifestyle, your daily routine and the time you actually have available to eat? Would you consider fitting your eating plan into your life, rather than forcing your life to revolve around a rigid plan? Doing this makes long-term consistency far more likely.

I – Interesting

Is it possible that eating becomes far more enjoyable when it’s interesting instead of boring? What if you switched things up by swapping certain foods, trying new ingredients or rotating meals you enjoy? When you apply this principle, your eating plan becomes something you look forward to.

E – Enjoyable

How awesome would it be to genuinely enjoy every meal? A simple way to ensure this is to list your favourite foods and include them regularly. Some foods aren’t ideal to eat all the time, but instead of eliminating them, you can treat them as “some-times” foods while keeping your nutritious “all-times” foods as the base of your plan. This keeps your eating enjoyable and sustainable.

S – Science Based
